A hack day is not a hackathon. A hack day is the entire team, or even organisation dropping their usual work and all working towards a particular goal or theme for the day.
The theme might be:
- Bug killing
- All developers pair up and spend the entire day cleaning up as many bugs as possible
- Throughput
- Make the product faster, by any measure of faster
